Using The BCP Generator

The Business Continuity Plan Generator comprises two volumes: the Guidelines for Completing the Plan AND the template Business Continuity Plan

The Objective
The objective is to produce a Business Continuity Plan which is both practical and able to be implemented. The resultant plan should be a 'live' document which is periodically (regularly) updated with revisions and updated and reviewed for applicability.

If the final BCP is merely printed, distributed, and becomes 'shelfware', then we have failed. 'We' because we will have failed to impress upon you the need to maintain and update the Plan and 'You' because if an emergency arises and are obliged to activate the BCP, it will most likely fail because no one will have any idea as to its contents.

The Approach
Unlike other approaches, the BCP Generator provides hundreds of hyperlinks between the two volumes to provide the Project Manager with the ability to move easily between the Guidelines and the corresponding section within the BCP template. The idea being that any member of the BCP Project Team is then able to refer to the Guidelines and then return to the template to complete / action as appropriate.

N.B. The template Business Continuity Plan is precisely that: a template, and consists of forms, checklists and control sheets to provide the Project Manager and team with the tools required to control the development and attainment of each milestone in turn. Simply put, the template Business Continuity Plan provides your BCP project with a framework in which, and around which, will be build your own Business Continuity Plan which should contain detailed procedures for each business area together with appropriate diagrams and GANTT charts showing the order of execution of the Business Continuity Plan and the dependencies, one to another.

Creating Your Own Plan
The template Plan contains hundreds of links back to the Guidelines document to provide easy access to the supporting guidelines. However, whilst you are encouraged to use this template to prepare your own BCP, we recognise that you will probably wish to use your own 'in house' style i.e. fonts, footers, headers and company logo etc.

Therefore, we suggest that you make a copy of the template BC Plan ('File', 'Save As' from the Microsoft Word menu) and edit it as you require. N.B. the embedded links to this new document will no longer be operative as the filename will have been modified. However, provided that the original template Business Continuity Plan remains, it may be referred to and its links back to the Guidelines for Completing the Plan will continue to operate. Alternatively you may open the Guidelines for Completing the Plan document directly and refer to the relevant section.
